Zoetrope: Eye of the Beholder

A hand-built zoetrope inspired by the Chinese ghost story Painted Skin (画皮), in which a beautiful woman is revealed to be a disguised ghost.

The zoetrope is designed so that its motion not only animates the images but also powers either blue or red LEDs, depending on the direction of the spin. The animation frames are hand-drawn and layered on top of one another: a beautiful woman rendered in blue and a skeletal ghost rendered in red.

When the zoetrope spins in one direction, the blue LEDs illuminate the images, revealing the woman in motion. Spun in the opposite direction, the red LEDs expose the hidden ghost beneath the surface. The same drawings produce two different animations, transforming the viewer's perception through light, movement, and color.
